By the time Thursday’s Makin’ Waves concert rolls around, youth attending the Whitney Pier Youth Club’s summer program may have some new words in their vocabulary. Presented by Protocase, a special performance from the Yukon’s Diyet & the Love Soldiers will take place at 12 noon featuring songs, stories, and, yes, even some new words from the roots performer, who is a certified Native Language Instructor.
Diyet was born in a tent and spent her childhood “in the bush”, or rather, was brought up on the ancestral lands of her people in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Coming from a family rooted in traditions but tempered with a good sense of adventurous hippie attitudes, Diyet has created a musical presence that is as diverse as her Southern Tutchone, Tlingit, Japanese and Scottish heritage.
Diyet & The Love Soldiers is alternative country, folk, roots and traditional with catchy melodies and stories deeply rooted in Diyet’s Indigenous world view and northern life. Backed by Love Soldiers: husband and collaborator, Robert van Lieshout and Juno Award winning producer, Bob Hamilton; this multi-instrumental trio from the Yukon has a sound that can fill a big stage or capture an intimate room.
“Diversity and accessibility are two of the most important elements of the Sydney Credit Union Makin’ Waves Music Festival,” says CBRM Recreation Program Coordinator Joe Costello. “Bringing this performance to the Whitney Pier Youth Club, located in a region nationally recognized as the most distinct multi-ethnic district of the Maritimes in the 20th century, means bringing art to youth who might not otherwise have access. Further to this, having the privilege of Diyet and her group perform and meet the youth provides an opportunity for these young people to explore and learn about one of the many First Nations cultures that populate our country.”
Diyet & the Love Soldiers will perform in the back lot of the Whitney Pier Youth Club at 12 noon on Thursday, July 26, in advance of their appearance at the Sydney Credit Union Makin’ Waves Music Festival at 6pm that evening. The afternoon performance is presented by Protocase and is open to the public.
“We take great pride in supporting arts and culture in Cape Breton, because it does wonders for enriching the community,” says Steve Lilley, co-founder and CEO of Protocase. “The Makin’ Waves pop-up concert is a great way to combine our love of the arts with our ongoing support of our friends at the Whitney Pier Youth Club.”
Sydney Credit Union Makin’ Waves Music Festival takes place in Wentworth Park each Thursday at 6pm from July 5th through August 2nd.
