The Next Big Thing high school talent search started as a high school project for organizer, Andrew Mortimer, to help engage young talent around the island. Three years later the talent search has become an event that high school students look forward to annually.
“The last few years, the competition included any kind of talent,” said Mortimer. “This year we want to specifically focus on musical acts.”
This year’s competition had an overwhelming influx of audition videos from high schools from around Cape Breton. A panel of judges reviewed the audition videos and selected 20 acts to perform in front of the four judges.
“We asked the judges to each select three performers from the Top 20, unfortunately resulting in eight talented acts being eliminated,” said Mortimer. “Now, the judges will mentor and coach their teams over the next six weeks.”
The judges all have musical and performing experience and will be able to offer guidance to these young performers. The judges are: Andrew Doyle, Aaron Lewis, Décota McNamara and Allison Haley.
“We are very fortunate in having such a high caliber of experienced judges to help coach and mentor their teams. The contestants are excited to have a chance to work with people who are directly connected with the music industry,” said Mortimer.
The Top 12 show is Wednesday, April 4, 7pm at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door or by calling Andrew Mortimer at 578-2090.
