Mulgrave Road Theatre is touring this summer with BINGO!, a brand new comedy written by internationally celebrated theatre artist Daniel MacIvor, and starring Heather Rankin.
It will play two performances at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay on Tuesday, August 2 and Wednesday, August 3, at 8 pm both nights.
The play recounts the misadventures of five friends as they gather in a hotel room on the eve of their 30th high school reunion.
Daniel MacIvor was born and raised in Sydney. His first play Blue Bells was presented at the University College of Cape Breton (now Cape Breton University) drama festival in 1982. He toured the world with his one man show, House, before retiring it at the CBU Boardmore Playhouse as a benefit for a drama scholarship.
His most popular play, Marion Bridge, was the first play in a trilogy written for Mulgrave Road. He wrote BINGO! for Mulgrave Road Theatre while he was Playwright in Residence at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta. MacIvor is currently a Playwright in Residence at Tarragon Theatre in Toronto. He lives in both Toronto and Nova Scotia.
Heather Rankin gained recognition for her comedic and musical talents as a member of the Cape Breton Summertime Revue in the late 1980s. As a part of The Rankin Family band, with her sisters, Raylene and Cookie, and her brothers, Jimmy and the late John Morris, Heather played to audiences around the world. She has also appeared in many critically praised movies, such as Thom Fitzgerald’s The Hanging Garden.
Many talented Maritime actors join Rankin in the cast of BINGO!. Merritt award-winner John Beale has put Peggy’s Cove on the map with a five-year run of his one-man clown show The Peggy Show. Multi-talented Marty Burt is known throughout Atlantic Canada as an actor, singer, director and producer and has been heavily involved in the development of new, innovative Canadian plays touring as far away as British Columbia and Iran.
Ryan Rogerson returns to Mulgrave Road after many summers at Two Planks and as a familiar voice in fan-favourite CBC radio dramas. Rounding out the cast is Emmy Alcorn, an award-winning artist who originated the role of Louise in MacIvor’s play Marion Bridge, first produced by MRT in 1998.
BINGO! is directed by MacIvor, assisted by Glace Bay native Richie Wilcox, and designed by Andrew Murray and Janet MacLellan with newcomer Victoria Williams.
Other performances scheduled for BINGO! include the Neptune Studio Theatre, Halifax, on July 26 and 27, and the Chedabucto Place Performance Centre in Guysborough on July 29 and 30.
