This Saturday, September 24th, millions of people across the globe are taking and calling for action on climate change with Moving Planet Day. Sydney is hosting one of thousands of events asking citizens to move on bicycles, unicycles, kayaks, on foot or by any active mode of transportation to represent a commitment to moving beyond fossil fuels.
Get Active, Go Local Cape Breton is inviting residents to come out and enjoy local food at Sydney’s farmers’ markets without using any fossil fuels. ACAP Cape Breton, in partnership with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, is hosting the event at both the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market and the Downtown Sydney Farmers’ Market.
“There has been a lot of positive momentum behind active transportation in the CBRM,” says Susan King, executive director at ACAP Cape Breton. “Moving Planet Day is highlighting the importance of reducing our carbon footprint which fits in nicely with the current healthy living and active transportation movement here in Cape Breton.”
Each market will have a Moving Planet Pledge for Cape Bretoners to show that they are ready to move past fossil fuels. The first 25 people arriving by active transportation at each market will be rewarded with $2 in market money to be used during the day’s market. The first market event takes place from 8:30 am to 1 pm at 340 Keltic Drive and the second takes place 1 pm to 4 pm at the corner of Pitt and George Streets, Sydney.
