Sydney was once known as the most cosmopolitan city east of Montreal because of the many diverse cultural groups that supplied workers for the steel plant and the coal mines.
Poles, Ukrainians, Italians, French, Scottish, and Greeks, among many more, all brought their traditional foods with them and a love of good food is perhaps the first thing to leap across cultural boundaries.
The Downtown Sydney merchants understand this and have returned with their outdoor food festival, “Take a Bite Out of Sydney”, scheduled for Saturday, June 11, from 11:30am to 2pm on Charlotte Street between Pitt Street and Prince Street.
Besides a chance to dine under sunny skies, the proceeds from this event will be going to the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank
The businesses offering reasonably priced samples of their menu in the event’s outdoor food court include Allegro Grill & Deli (222 Charlotte Street), Flavor (16 Pitt Street), Governors Pub & Eatery (233 Esplanade), Peking Restaurant (355 Charlotte Street), Cat & The Fiddle Café (319 Charlotte Street), Cape Breton Fudge Company (15 Prince Street), Trio (Cambridge Suites Hotel, Esplanade), Crown & Moose Pub (Delta Hotel, Esplanade), and Casino Nova Scotia All-Star Grill (525 George Street).
Along with al fresco brunching, musical entertainment will be provided by Pat and Winnie Chafe, Carl MacKenzie, and other talented Cape Breton acts.
Besides the fine food available, the organizers hope to highlight the many distinctive shops and services of the downtown Sydney area.
