The Sydney Waterfront Festival continues with lots of activities for the young and young at heart. The Festival kicked off with ever-popular events including Kidspree, Movie in the Park, and ’80s-themed Yoga on Charlotte Street. Already attracting approximately 2000 people, this year’s festival is shaping up to be another success. Teddy Bear Picnic is scheduled for this evening at 6pm in Wentworth Park.
Sydney Waterfront District Association (SWDA) introduces Amazing Race: Waterfront Edition Season 2 Thursday evening at 6. Following the success of last year’s event, which was organized by summer students, the event is returning for a second season and is being featured as an official event of the Sydney Waterfront Festival, Presented by Sydney Credit Union.
“The positive feedback received after the event last year made it an obvious decision to bring it back, but this year there are more teams, more prizes, and better challenges,” says Michelle Wilson, Executive Director for SWDA. “Over 20 teams of two will be competing this Thursday August 7th, beginning behind City Hall and race around the District stopping at nine different locations.”
After watching the event unfold last summer, Claude Nearing offered his assistance in planning the Amazing Race: Waterfront Edition Season 2. Nearing worked as a segment producer on Amazing Race Canada when it came to Cape Breton two years ago. Having his expertise allowed organizers to increase the difficulty and creativity of the challenges this year. Nearing is currently the fitness/membership coordinator for the Canadian Council of the Blind, which will play a part in one of the nine challenges. All of the tasks will be both physically and mentally challenging, but at the end of the day it is all about having fun.
This year’s event also sees the addition of many more prizes. The first-place team will receive two (2) one-month passes to Ascendo Fitness along with two (2) Ascendo swag bags and 1st place plaques. Other prizes include a one-month pass for the YMCA, a Cape Breton Proud sweater, two (2) $10 gift cards for Sport Chek, two (2) certificates from D-10 CrossFit, punch cards from G-Fit Fitness Studio, and various swag from Sydney Credit Union. All participants will receive a Sydney Waterfront District reusable bag along with a smoothie from Downtown Nutrition.
On Friday the festival continues with a two-day street party featuring local vendors, sidewalk sale, live entertainment, kid’s activities, food trucks, Buskers, and more! Charlotte Street will be closed at 7am, and the festivities get under way at noon, and run til approximately 9pm, and Saturday’s event runs from 10am til approximately 5pm.
The festival finishes with a bang on the waterfront on Saturday starting at 6pm. Summer Rabbit will open at 6pm on the grassy area next to Portside. RedShed will also perform, and the night will end with a bang featuring a fireworks display. The Sydney Waterfront District Business Association would like to thank all sponsors of this year’s festival: CBRM, Sydney Credit Union, CBRM Recreation, The Cape 94.9, Cape Breton Post, Downtown Nutrition, Canadian Council of the Blind, El Jefe Mexican Restaurant, and Concept Creative.
