Well, it’s that time of year—time to put away your snowboard gear. As much as I love it, it still makes me smile when I put it away, knowing skate season is in full swing… f*ck yea. Or, if you’re like Zach, you never did stop skating, just skated right on through the snow, ice and crappy winter weather.
I don’t think, in the history of skateboarding in Cape Breton, there have ever been so many skate spots around here. The parks alone, for example, include one full on concrete park in Coxheath with the best flowing street-course and a rad feeling bowl; and Glace Bay—a full-on concrete bowl, with the spine going into the mini bowl; and lastly SAD, just an all around fun, half concrete / half asphalt street course. Plus many other ‘modular’ style parks that we won’t mention. But not only are there parks, there’s also the mini ramps in Glace Bay and New Waterford (somewhere hidden in someone’s garage) and the possibility (inevitability, really) of an indoor youth centre/indoor skatepark in Glace Bay. Time’s are good if you’re a skater and you’re lucky enough to be living in Cape Breton and have these rad spots.
Back to the mini’s… These two gingers have been skating Glace Bay’s soon to be ‘undercurrent’ and my garage ramp pretty steadily. Regulars at these sessions are Mason Burke, Ryan Mansfield, Dan -o- Cameron, Matt & Dave Sawler, Joe MacLeod, Mike Fahey and MacLean just to name a few. There’s a wide array of ages and skate styles all mushed up together for some late night sessions and laughs, and some really good vibes. Dan Cameron is basically destroying everything in front of him, backside/frontside blunt circus tricks for days. At the pace he’s going, he’s going to be pulling off some crackers & cheese trickery by August. Dave Sawler, 38 years young and still killing it.
Speaking of Dan Cameron… Mark, Adam, Zach & Dan were skating Foundation Gap last week and Dan threw down. Switch heel, nollie back big spin, not too shabby for early March. Zach won’t talk about himself so I’ll say it: late ‘shove its’ didn’t land any over the gap but has some memories imprinted on his hips in bruise form.
News & Rumours…..
-The Big Dirty 2? 2.5? or Coastal? OA vid? We don’t know. The newest rumour is that Ryan Mansfield (Ollie Around) and Mark Hennessey (The Big Dirty) are going to join forces and combine their footage from the past couple of years to make one single skate flick due sometime summer 2010…maybe.
-Real ‘known associates’ inspired skate spots. If you don’t know what this means, you aren’t alone. Google it.
-Extension of Glace Bay Park to include a street course.
-Concrete park in Northside.
-Brian Sumner or Christian Hosoi coming down for Undercurrent Youth Centre / Skatepark opening.
– Return of the legend Harry Doyle? We await his arrival.
Lastly, if you’re skating one of our parks or really any spot, bring a broom and keep it clean and don’t let the drug users and lurkers ruin a good thing on us.
‘Til next time…Roll Forever.
