Cape Breton University will host its 5th annual Mall of Science event on Saturday, May 30, at the Mayflower Mall in Sydney as part of the Science Rendezvous initiative. The event will run from 12-4 pm and includes a little something for every age group and interest.
The Mall of Science is a free, all-day science festival that aims to highlight and promote science, with the ultimate goal of improving student enrolment and public investment in science and technology for the future. It works to engage and transform the general public from passive supporters of science and technology to active and passionate champions who will develop a basic understanding of the important role science plays in our rapidly changing world.
With hands-on, inquiry-based science activities, exciting demonstrations, giveaways, and interactions with CBU Professors, Lab Instructors and students, this free event is part of the national Science Rendezvous initiative to promote science awareness within communities.
Fun, interactive displays—including grow your own garden, dino dig, a chemistry magic show, an outdoor nature challenge, memory games, and magic berries—ensure everyone leaves with a fascination for science and all that is has to offer. Visitors will also get the chance to learn about the stars in a portable planetarium called STARlab, as well as check out a 3D printer and robotics with C@P and take flight with CASARA’s flight simulator.
“We’re thrilled to be able to provide this free opportunity to the community,” says event organizer Chantelle Cormier, a senior lab instructor at CBU. “By getting youth excited about science at a young age, we hope that their interest will continue to grow, guiding them towards becoming innovators in science and technology. On top of that we want them to know that science is fun and interesting. It’s not every day that people in Sydney have free access to activities such as Starlab, a dinosaur dig, robotics, build-your-own stethoscope, a flight simulator or a chemistry magic show.”
The Mall of Science offers a fun afternoon of science demonstrations, activities and prizes for all ages.
