How ya now! (sorry to steal your lines, Kelly). Well, this is Scenery 5 and this is my first time writing so don’t be too hard on me. Let’s start out by facing the sad truth that skateboarding is almost over. But hey, look on the bright side, snowboarding is just two months away. For you who don’t understand how close that is, Sunday River opened October 1, so hurry up and buy your boards and clothes and stuff. Speaking of winter, all signs show that we are in for a bad one, so for all of us who ride, that means a good time.
In September there was a contest in Antigonish. The set up was OK and there was a surprisingly good turn-out of skaters (remember, this is Antigonish). Sydney’s Jan MacLean, now residing in Halifax, brought some of the Halifax locals to this contest and two of them won. Dave “Dirt-Boy” Priest took first in the 18 and over division, and some Jon kid won 14 and under. In the 15-17 division Allan Yorke placed first. His second 1st place contest finish this year.
RUMOURS – Is Trevor opening another Alternative Sports in Halifax? … Did Al Yorke stop skating to build cabins in the woods? … Does New Waterford have a scene? Chuck Henry and Doug MacAulay say “Yes!” … Does New Waterford have more places to skate than Sydney and Glace Bay? Chuck Henry and Doug MacAulay say yes! Whatever … Are Glace Bay skaters going to get the beat down? … Slayer are coming to Sydney! NO … Geeber is cool? … A 2-4 of Keith’s was 15 bucks on the long weekend in October! Ya, right … Any skater can sleep at Siobahn’s house, just clean up after yourself.
FACTS – Jan and Chris’ apartment is huge … Green Day and Face to Face are coming to Halifax on October 9. Mark Sparrow will be there (or was) with bells on … Kim is cool afterall. She interviewed S.N.F.U. with Peter Rogers for CAPR radio … Surf to Snow are closed. Sorry Geoff! … Don’t tease the cows or wreck the fences.
GOING OFF – Gerritt Taylor is ripping. This northside local is definitely the best over there. The crappier the board is, the better he becomes. Scott MacDonald – consistency.
POSER OF THE MONTH – Adam Moore According to quite a few people, Adam doesn’t like to skate in front of his girlfriend in case he falls. You’re only young once, there will be plenty of time for chicks.
SOMETHING NEW – St. Joseph’s Church in Reserve Mines is rad. There is a wheel chair ramp that forms a spine and also there are concrete steps that grind. Well this is the end of Scenery 5. If you have any information about your scene that you would like to see printed, drop it off at Alternative Sports on Prince Street.
