Hey there skate-types, I saw you at Trevor’s yesterday, bumming stuff. Welcome to my skate-stuff section.
An introduction first. My name is Jan MacLean and I’ve been skating (and stuff) for damn-near 10 years, so I guess I’m qualified to write about our scene in Sydney and surrounding. I’m going to try to write a column every issue of this ‘zine covering the latest shit, spots and sick skaters of the month.
Most of you have probably skated with me before or you know who I am so feel free to ask for what you want to see, or write your own and give it to me or Muller. It will get in, seriously.
Don’t feel ignored if you are Northside or G-Bay. I’m doing stuff on you guys in future issues, too. O.K., enough of the introduction .
Our scene in Sydney this year is ripping – like 5 sponsored riders, and Trevoir is Maritime rep for about 5 companies.
Sick of yellow curbs? Try the brand new metal edge loading dock a little further into the north end, the DQ gap in Sydney River, along with the new Rahey’s pyramid and the Wal-Mart Crazy Woman bank. Keep an eye out for a new little gap at the Casino, some manual stuff at the new Rasin Box on Alexandra Street, and a whole lot of new ramps and obstacles at the North Sydney Park later in the summer.
Serious for a paragraph or two…
Remember all that vibe? If you don’t like someone because they aren’t local then you are an idiot. Simple as that. You are supposed to be having fun, not being the coolest guy around. Make all impressions with your riding abilities, not your new t-shirt.
Our scene will only get better when you are spending you’re your energy thinking about flipping this and that, not glaring at and snaking some guy because his pants look funny.
Back to the Scenery…
This month’s spot is obviously the metal edge loading dock in the north end with the sweet, brand new pavement. (This is an open invitation to everybody!!!!). The dock has plenty of room for a huge session (I’m talkin’ 25 people). Some guy who works there said have fun AFTER 5:30 pm. I think we should respect his wishes.
This is hypocritical, cause I was there at 3:30, but we should respect the fellow’s wishes and respect his business, since he’s letting us skate on his property after hours. Sound cool? Let’s not piss off another good spot, guys. (Clean up ollie junk).
Anyway, me and Justin Dakai went and did some stuff to show you the quality of the spot. Well, we even landed the tricks, but you’ll never know cause we ran out of film. So check out the picts. Justin rips, he just keeps to himself and is a lot better than you noticed cause he doesn’t talk shit.
GOING OFF – Craig Davis
TRICKS – Allan MacLean
DQ gap – Al Yorke yeah whatever; Jerry Boyle Monte Carlo
LATEST SHIT – Merritt busting up his car driving home from college; Geoff trying Honda/Marley gap 12 times with with f-upped knee (He’ll land it next time, fer sure); Some power trip cop calling me a pussy for picking up my board when he drove the paddy wagon by; Glen MacDonald’s new Magna 750.
Okay, let’s do the shit. Who is that little poser who dissed the “older guys” simply because we are old? Didn’t he have a brain transplant or something? Shut up and skate you loser.
Wrap Up:
1/ Colin’s curb tricks
2/ Buffato’s flip mastery
3/ Craig’s B-sides
4/ Al Yorke’s flip stiff
5/ Geoff’s IGA flips
6/ C.Merritt’s sketchy something that you can’t land
Is that enough for this month? NO! Let’s talk about scenes. Northside, you got it going on. Everybody knows everyone else. I’m glad I know a few of you to party with. Harry too, there every weekend and spare moment with the Impala or Monte. Anyone who doesn’t go because of who will be there to vibe sucks. DO YOU SKATE? Who cares who’s ex-girlfriend is scoring somebody’s step-sister and then some mother – shit. Man, you are here to have fun, not to socialize. Never mind the bee-atches till you are done. After 10:00 vibing might matter, but for now, everyone with wood under their feet is your best friend. Don’t dis me for my views.
It is sad that it is necessary to remind each other what we are about… Screw cops, society, authority, – Screw You! I have fun every day. Yeah, I have problems too, take it out on a 360 flip, feels better than bottling it up, doesn’t it? You tried and that’s good enough. Anyway, that’s enough
