Hey Punks. This is Scenery III. Welcome to the wide world of rumour and misinformation. Yeah, I know, nothing has been done to the North Sydney park yet. Well, all the money is in the bank and J.Porter says his plans are being drawn up by an architect so they can be rightfully carried out by carpenters. Wonder how long that will take?
POSER OF THE MONTH – it seems the only input I get about this column is who will be the next poser of the month. This month’s poser won by a huge majority due to his bike-riding, girly hanger skills. MUCK, a.k.a. Frankie MacEachern is seen more frequently in Butt-worm’s car or on the arm of drunk chicks than out skating.
Dear Glace Bay: I don’t know anybody out there to do a little story with so get hold of me through the shop or Al Yorke, y’all know him, right? I’ll come out and film and write. If you want to see it, I have to see it.
There were a million Capers at the Halifax contest courtesy of Trev’s van, Harry’s Mopar and various parents and buses. Hotel Commons and the Jungle Gym Lounge slept (or didn’t sleep) all who came up. The contest riders must thank the guy who let everyone on earth stay at his vacant grandmother’s house (like 30 people). “Smoke on the step, please.” All the guys from New Brunswick are cool as shit. They are just like us, screw contest practice, let’s go get drunk and smoke!
Contest standouts include Dirtboy, That Guy from A-1, and the A.S. team rider Jeff Delong, who placed 3rd in the sponsored category. Jeff also trick of the contest with a huge, huge nollie over a garbage barrel (you know, the ones you can barely ollie). Al Yorke got ripped off bad because no one knew who he was. He whupped everyone in his heat and many others but didn’t even make cut.
The Fall River contest the next days was fun. Fall River is a mini-ramp complex with a couple of 4’ ramps, a wide 6’ and a vert. Dave Priest won with a monster melanchollie from the vert ramp, over a 3’ wide deck, and into the six foot. BIG. Muller paid for me to enter, the only Caper in the contest. I have not skated on a ramp in years, but I got a surprise 7th place or so, beating some guys who had better tricks with old school ramp stylin’.
NEW SPOT SECTION – if you go to the Casino to skate you’ll have to go on Christmas or Remembrance Day, the only time it’s closed. There are a bunch of manual pads, a wall to drop, some sliders and a ledge all along a triple set that no one will ever land. It is a huge time bust. I think the security guards were hand-picked as the toughest scumbags in Cape Breton.
Also, if you have the balls, try to ollie the new gap at SAD Church. You will have to be better than Al MacLean, G. Keough, and Dean from NFLD; none of whom made it even after many tries. Hal and Geoff both broke boards. Al had a ½-healed sprained ankle when he did it. Geoff killed himself and Dean just gave up to save himself for the rest of Sydney. SAD gap was the first place we took him. (Snicker, laugh). A. Yoke has it all on tape. Speaking of Andrew, he bought himself a $1400 camera to tape skating snowboarding, an excellent move to support our scene. Thanks.
A correction from last month: The guy doing the Library stairs is Geoff Keough. Sorry Geoff. Also keep in mind that we are just getting started so we are still working on stuff like picture quality. Sorry about the dark sequences Sean.
TRICKS – Al Yorke: definitely trick of the month – 180 over double set at N.S. SuperValu with Dean; Craig, Al, Jan: long backside 5-0 grinds at Metal Curbs; Colin: backside tailslides to fakie, wherever he feels like it.
RUMOURS – could Muller expand into a line of decks? If true they should be called “Sydney Skates”… could “SILVER” Drag Racing be coming to Cape Breton? What does that mean? They are skater run, that’s what! … is Stu building a mini in his backyard? Rob L in his garage too? … are hardcores going to get worked by P.M.? – don’t think so, fat boy … are Colin MacKay and Moses coming to skate a vert ramp we don’t have? … Rhoda and Geoff and Kim and Nobody, or is that Dean & Louse? Yeah right … has the Glace Bay park been started? … a N.S. championship contest in Sydney on the 18th?
FACTS – Jan MacLean quit Surf to Snow after Halifax contest … no free Airwalks for Jan and Geoff … Success is obedience to a structured way of life. Don’t do it … Trevor Muller’s team is ruling. Occupants include Al MacLean, Andrew Yorke, Trevor Nickerson from Yarmouth, and Jeff Delong and Morris from New Brunswick.
