If you’ve ever walked through the front doors of the historic Savoy Theatre to see a show, or performed on the acoustically favoured main stage of the 90-year-old building, the Savoy Theatre Society wants to hear from you.
Celebrating nine decades in the downtown heart of Glace Bay, Cape Breton, the Savoy Theatre is launching a unique fundraising opportunity, aimed at anyone who has ever enjoyed the Savoy Theatre experience, on the stage or in the audience. The campaign is simply called 90 for 90. The first 90 donors will be entered for a chance to win 2 tickets for a show from our 90th year.
Savoy Theatre Manager Pam Leader says staff and fundraising committee members will be reaching out to artists, patrons and community leaders via a friendly phone, email and letter fundraising campaign.
“If you love and appreciate the Savoy, all we’re asking for is an individual donation of $90. That’s it. One dollar for every year the building has been providing great shows in our community. It’s a small ask from individuals but it would make a big difference,” says Leader.
Business owners will also be asked to participate by donating $1000 and the committee is hoping to find 90 businesses willing to do just that. Gary Chant, Savoy Theatre board president is one such business owner.
“I fully support the 90 for 90 fundraising campaign,” says Chant. “As a local business owner, I’m very aware of the benefits of having the Savoy in our midst. The building itself is needed and used for every type of community event; the productions held there bring additional business into our area; we’re provided with top-notch entertainment, local and otherwise; it procures fantastic opportunities for talented and creative people. The list goes on and on. The Savoy is an integral part of our community. Let’s contribute to celebrate this milestone and then push for another 90 years.”
For the past 90 years, the Savoy Theatre has hosted every type of event imaginable, from musicals, galas and community assemblies to weddings, movies, fashion shows, dinner theatres, concerts and political announcements. During the 90th anniversary year, patrons will continue to enjoy more great performance offerings and events like: Beauty and the Beast, The Legends – Their Stories – Tribute to Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline and The Everly Brothers, The Cape Breton Summertime Revue, Are you Being Served Cape Breton Dinner Theatre, The Return of the Three Pianos, Down Home Classics with Peter Gillis, Aaron Lewis and Greg Donaghey and more.
Pam Leader says there is a lot of excitement surrounding the anniversary calendar. “We’re going to be very busy and we have amazing support from the community when we put on productions, so we hope to tap into that same type of enthusiasm for this fundraising endeavour. It’s also been designed to be easy and issue-free to donate, so we really hope everyone will help out if they’re able to do so. The Savoy is worth it.”
The Savoy Theatre 90 for 90 fundraising campaign will be launched the week of January 30. Anyone wishing to offer a $90 donation to support 90 for 90 can do so by visiting the box office, or mailing cheque or money order to PO Box 339 Glace Bay B1A 2C1.
