First of all, you know the hiss of a demo tape recorded on a Memorex DBS tape? Well, this one’s got it!! Despite sounding a lot like other so-called “alternative” bands, and the hiss, I liked this collection of songs. Demos are usually exciting to listen to cause you never know what to expect and this demo is no exception. The Smiling Uniks is Christopher Jones (b), Charlie Colter (g), Michael Gabriel (g/v) and Devon Strang (d). My hat is tipped to Mr. Charlie Colter whose guitar work smoked, even through the aforementioned sound quality. And what can I say about Ian MacIntyre who played on this recording? He can beat the skins with the best of them. My picks on this one would have to be “Sugar Tree”, “Upsidedown” and “Crazy Moss Head”. – Rick Matheson
