ProletariART 2015, CBU’s annual exhibition for the people, on now

The Cape Breton University Art Gallery opens its fourth annual community exhibition, ProletartiART: The People’s Art Exhibit, Friday January 30. More than 135 artists from all over Cape Breton Island responded to the call for entries, which began in November. ProletariART exhibits works of art by the general public, everyone from beginners to professional artists, as long as they identify in some way as a Cape Bretoner.

In addition to works by professional and emerging artists, this year’s ProletariART includes a number youth and school groups. The Riverview High Anime Club who first participated in 2014, have collaborated on large colourful character drawings. While members of the Whitney Pier Youth Club, ranging in age from four to 16 years, are showing work in the community exhibition for the first time.

“ProletariART is a truly democratic exhibition. There is no jurying process, which means everyone has an opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a public gallery, regardless of age or experience. Visitors will see children’s drawings hung next to works by professional artists and materials ranging from found objects and household items to traditional art and craft media,” says Sara Roth, Education and Outreach Coordinator at the CBU Art Gallery.

The public is invited to the opening reception, which will be held from 6-8 pm, Friday, January 30. Art gallery admission and events are always free. Parking at CBU is $1. The exhibition runs until February 27.
