The Northside Community Guest Home Foundation held its 3rd annual “Gala for the Ages” fundraiser on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the John J. Nugent Fireman’s Centre in Sydney Mines. This event featured community celebrities in a comical beauty pageant that was MC’d by Scott Boyd of 101.9 The Giant and judged by Georgette Young and Nadia Saker of Housewives in Heels catering. The community worked together to raise $18,000.00, bringing the Guest Home’s “Complete the Dream” campaign to a close. The Guest Home would like to thank the many sponsors, volunteers, pageant contestants and attendees for their generous support. Event sponsors and campaign donor listings can be found on the Foundation’s website.
“This community really pulled together to help us meet the fundraising needs for the development of Cara House. We can now begin to work toward supporting the new developments we have in plan and toward upgrading other units and equipment.”
Cara House is filled with resident-focused furnishings, equipment and activity items thanks to numerous supporters. It contains 39 single rooms, all with a view of either the water or the Heroes Garden (garden development supported by Guest Home staff members) and with 12 rooms having ceiling lifts. The remaining rooms have tracks that await lifts as funding becomes available. It contains a geo-thermal heating system, a beautiful activities lounge – the Annie Verschuren Lounge – with hand-crafted chapel service items, a portable piano and sound system, along with three dining rooms, three living rooms, a hair salon, outdoor patios, beautiful gardens, a family room with a kitchenette, shower and reclining chairs and a state of the art therapeutic room containing items like an ultrasonic bladder scanner, wheelchair scale, blanket warmer, sit to stand lift, therapeutic bed, recumbent and arm bicycles. Campaign donors also made it possible to purchase wireless bed alarms, vital signs monitors, and much more.
The Complete the Dream campaign began approximately two and a half years ago with the development of the Guest Home’s latest addition, Cara House. Cara House is home to 39 long term care residents and provides services to all 144 residents of the Guest Home as well as to 25 enriched housing residents.
