The rustic setting of the Louisbourg Playhouse will welcome Shanneyganock, Music Newfoundland’s 2009 “Entertainers of the Year”, on the evening of July 4. The name Shanneyganock is based on the gaelic word for “creature of the night.” Known as one of Newfoundland’s best party bands, the boys of Shanneyganock have an eight-album strong discography and several cross-Canada tours behind them. With Chris Andrews, Mark Hiscock, Bob Pike and Mike Clarke weaving together jaunty instrumentation and energetic vocals, audiences can expect in an evening of drenched in East Coast charm and humour.
Aside from their classic Newfoundland folk standards are the stand-up, charged commentary of tunes such as “Newfoundland Must Band”, an appeal to fellow Newfoundlanders to come together and assert their right to control their own destiny. In referencing concerns such as locked-up fish plants, the challenge of finding good work, and lack of say over shifting industrial patterns, it’s a call to unity and self-determination that many Cape Bretoners can relate to.
Shanneyganock will appear in Louisbourg fresh from their showing at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso. The show is scheduled for 8:00pm at the Lousibourg Playhouse.
