The Board of Directors for the Annual Coal Bowl Classic Basketball Tournament in New Waterford have officially announced this year’s tournament will have to be cancelled.
In February, Breton Education Centre would normally be hosting the 36th annual basketball tournament, hosting teams from across Canada for a week-long event, but organizers say that this year it is simply not possible to do the groundwork needed.
Co-chair Jacquelyn Poirier said there was really no other choice.
“With no end in sight to the Work to Rule situation, the choice was really made for us. Even if they come to an agreement now, our timeline has run out. There are many, many details that go into making this tournament the success it has been for the past 35 years and it just wouldn’t be possible to do what needs to be done.”
The annual Coal Bowl Classic in New Waterford, which celebrated 35 years in 2016, has never been cancelled before, in the entire history of the event.
