New Waterford has a long tradition of mining so of course their annual summer festival is called Coal Dust Days.
The eight day event begins on Sunday, July 17, with the annual parade at 3 pm and runs to Sunday, July 24, with a thrilling fireworks display.
Events during the week include the Antique Car Show, the Sobeys Children’s Festival, the Family Walk in Drive in, the New Waterford Firefighters Competition, The Susan Coombs Memorial Teddy Bear Picnic, the festival’s 1st Annual Pet Show, and the popular Plummer Avenue Day.
There are also cribbage tournaments, pancake breakfasts, tarabish championship events, and outdoor movies at the “Screen On The Green”.
A brand new event is the 1st Annual Murder Mystery, “Murder Among the Matteys”, an evening of buccandeers, booty, and blood shed sponsored by the Coal Dust Days Committee and CBRM Recreation Department to be held at Colliery Lands Park. Spots are limited. You must be 19 years of age or older. Pre-registration is required and there is a charge of $5 per person. For more information call the Coal Dust Days Hotline at 862-4710.
Week long events include the free Coal Dust Days mini-putt at River Ryan Campground (call 862-8367), guided tours and artifact displays at the Fort Petrie Historic Military Museum on Route 28, New Victoria sponsored by the Sydney Harbor Fortification Society Museum (call Jolene at 862-2271), and the art display, “A Brush with Water Colour”, sponsored by and held at the New Waterford Credit Union at the Main Street Art Gallery (call the curator at 862-3392).
From Monday, July 18, to Saturday, July 23, New Waterford hosts the 2011 Big Leagues Canadian Championships at the Gerry Marsh Field with teams from across Canada participating in the tournament. For more information check out their website at http://canadianbigleaguechampionship2011.com/.
The CBRM Recreation team is currently looking for more participants and creative entries for this year’s parade. Cash prizes will be awarded $300 for 1st, $200 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd place. Please come out and participate in the 28th annual Coal Dust Days Parade!
