The Community Focus Centre of New Waterford, in partnership with Authors’ With Glasses, recently held a very successful night of author readings (by Steve Sutherland and Ian McNeil) and music (the great Nipper MacLeod) at JT’s on Plummer Avenue in the historic mining town.
Proceeds from that event went to support the group’s efforts to support youth recreational programming.
One such project, New Waterford’s first community garden, is due to break ground on Saturday, June 4, at the corner of MacLeod and King Streets.
According to the group’s website, “The garden, a pilot project of the Community Focus Centre, will be cultivated by seniors groups, youth groups, and other community organizations. The Community Focus Centre is looking for individuals wishing to volunteer or learn more and community organizations interested in growing fresh vegetables, maybe some flowers, and, moreover, community.”
The use of the land, on the corner of MacLeod Avenue and King Street, as well as compost, has been donated by the Cape Breton Regional Muncipality. Already, the New Waterford Credit Union and Lingan Generating Station, as part of the Nova Scotia Power Inc., have signed on as major sponsors of this community effort.
