Beloved local environmental non-profit ACAP Cape Breton announces new executive director, Amanda McDougall. After a long search for a fitting director the charitable organization has finally found what they had been waiting for in a local woman who has big plans to protect our Island’s landscape.
“Having worked at ACAP in the past, it feels a little like coming home” says McDougall. A CBU Alumni with a background in political science, Amanda found her passion for the environment, community development, and the non-profit sector while working with the Main-a-Dieu Development Association. She was part of the team who pushed for the MV Miner removal, describing that effort as a life changing experience, and an education on how communities can band together to protect their coastlines and the environment around them. More recently, Amanda managed CBU’s Rural-Urban Immigration Pilot for Cape Breton, and is currently a Municipal Councillor for District 8 of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
“I have always had a passion for the environment and community engagement so leading ACAP into this new chapter allows me to incorporate all of that into my job,” says McDougall. “This job is incredibly important at a time where climate change action is at a tipping point, pollinators need all of our attention, and the planet is fighting a war on plastics. I am eager for the challenges ahead and excited to take them on with an incredible team of colleagues and passionate Board of Directors beside me.”
After spending many years located at 582 George Street, ACAP recently sold their building and has found a new home at 90 Esplanade. The staff is working to prepare the new Centre for Sustainable Communities for an open house in the spring and is excited to welcome the community to the new space.
ACAP Cape Breton is a registered charity with a clear vision in which local people are actively engaged, working, and learning together to build a healthy and sustainable community. ACAP offers the knowledge that Cape Bretoners need to make greener choices, and works directly on practical solutions that help protect and restore our natural environment.
