The Lumière Arts Festival Association has announced its call for project proposals for the 2014 event. Submissions will be accepted beginning Monday, February 17. Artists from across the island are encouraged to apply. All artistic mediums will be considered: visual arts, dance, theatre and performance, music and sound, film and video, and fine craft.
Entering its fourth year, Lumière is Cape Breton’s only art-at-night event. In the spirit of the international Nuit Blanche phenomenon, Lumière brings art to the streets, shop fronts, sidewalks, and public spaces of downtown Sydney. Each year the festival presents fresh, contemporary art projects that transform civic spaces.
Lumière is a free annual night time celebration of the arts taking place on September 27, 2014 from 6:57pm – 11:57 pm. For one night only, Lumière transforms downtown Sydney into a nucleus of creativity, bringing together visual art, performance, music and craft to invigorate our senses and rouse our minds.
The popular event provides a platform for collaboration, cross-pollination and dialogue. Connecting the local population with diverse forms of cultural expression, the organizers of Lumière partner artists with unconventional spaces in downtown Sydney to create a unique cultural experience. Venues are located on Charlotte Street & the Esplanade between Townsend & Amelia Streets. Lumière takes audience engagement to new levels.
The festival brings art to the public in an accessible, interactive and engaging fashion that underlines the importance of public participation and cultural democracy. Taking art off of the white walls of the gallery, the remoteness of the stage, and out of the studio, Lumière transforms our community for a festive night of cultural immersion.
In 2013, Lumière brought over 5,000 people to Sydney’s downtown core. It also earned the Sydney Area Chamber of Commerce’s People’s Choice Award for Favourite Outdoor Experience.
This year, Lumière will take place on Saturday, September 27. The deadline to apply is April 18, 2014 at 11:59 PM.
