The Charles and Wayne Lorway Fund, created by members of the Lorway family to honour the memory of their parents and grandparents, is now accepting applications.
“Our grandparents were wonderful mentors who taught us the importance of family and community”, says grandson Chris Lorway who now lives in Toronto. “Throughout their lives in Sydney they were passionate about investing in the local economy and so we felt this initiative would honour their legacy as city builders.”
The Lorway Fund, founded in 2014, was established to honour the values that Charlie and Wayne imparted to their family and friends.
Throughout their working lives and well into retirement, Charles and Wayne were both active in numerous community organizations including the Sydney Rotary Club, the Canadian Federation of University Women, the Chamber of Commerce, and New Dawn. They firmly believed in the power of entrepreneurship and engaged citizens to make a positive difference in their community.
The Fund will provide individuals, organizations and businesses with one-time grants to pursue opportunities in entrepreneurship (the creation or advancement of early stage business initiatives), arts and culture development, and/or education or learning activities that advance these causes.
The activities of selected recipients will reflect the Lorway Fund’s overall goal of developing a more vibrant, dynamic, and resilient Cape Breton community and economy.
“I think my parents would be proud that their children and grandchildren have decided to remember them in this way,” says son Richard Lorway. “They always believed in the power of community, and would be happy to know that those values have been passed on to future generations.”
Application forms and more information on the Fund and applicant criteria can be found at newdawn.ca.
Applications for grants will be accepted until June 15, 2015. Awards will be announced on August 1, 2015.
The Lorway family has established the Fund through New Dawn’s Community Education Foundation. The New Dawn Community Education Foundation was created to provide education, learning, conversation and research opportunities around community economic and social development.
