The locals tape compilation was successfully released at the show on the 27th. There’s a ton of bands on it. I got some master tapes and put together a mix. I only with that I could have got more demos. Me and Sean bought 50 blank tapes from Alfred remo for 40 bucks. We gave them away for free, and we plan on releasing an updated version at the next show.
WHO’S ON THE TAPE?
Barbie’s Revenge: An older funk alternative metal rap band from Sydney featuring Dan Baldwin on drums, Dan Vincent on vocals, Mike Haaako on bass and backups and Mike Slaven on guitar. They put out two tapes (We’re Listening and Barbie’s Revenge). Their first one was recorded on the makeshift and the second one at Railroad. Danny Vincent eventually moved to Toronto (followed by Mike Hawko) and they broke up. “Rock On” was the sprout of an argument between the rockers and the skateboarders (long long resolved thank God).
$ellout$: The newest punk band from New Waterford / Glace Bay, these guys play modern punk with ’70s punk inspirations. Members include Paul Pink, Dan Sparrow, and Chuck and Brent Wadden. They have an unreleased demo with six songs on it, recorded by Dan. I don’t know what it’s called so I named it myself.
Spincycle Squared: Spincycle Squared is the product of Alfred Remo’s imagination. Alf was in a band called Lamer, but they broke up and it’s just him and his keyboard and guitar. Spincycle currently has one tape, and it’s usually for sale at the shows. “Ballad of the Fighting Newfoundlanders” is an unreleased track.
Shaft: What else can you say? The power band that erupted out of the late great Shane Brown Fan Club. Jay Dauphinee, Jay Smith, Hectron, and Mike Hawko are a diverse crowd with wildly different musical backgrounds. They have an unreleased demo and a song on the Remnants compilation. Broken up now (Jason D moved to Halifax), Shaft just played two very successful reunion shows. The track’s real name is “Ripple Effect”, but I forgot and wrote the wrong thing down after hearing a joke from Jay Smith.
Unwanted Guests: A band that just likes to get drunk and party. Lennie Gouthro, Ian Chaisson, Charles Curry (Jock Hardy), and Dan Sparrow rock every show they go to. With two tapes (both engineered by Dan Baldwin), “Moonshine” was taken off the recent recording. The new UG tape, It’s Fucking Groundhog Day Again can be found at some shows and goes for about 5 bucks. They only sold asbout 20. This band is reunion only now, three of the members attend university.
Shane Brown Fan Club: Sean MacGillivray, Mike Hawko, Jay Smith and Hector Smith made up the long running punk/alternative band from back in the day. Closely linked with Tilted in the olden days, they put out two tapes (Concerned Citizen and Don’t Let The Bastards Bring You Down). “Pandora” was taken off their last recording, an unreleased demo recorded the same night as the Barbie’s Revenge track.
’77 Impala Special: Leftover guys from Barbie’s Revenge, Shane Brown Fan Club, and Shaft got together to form a punk band that can tune! (All those years in Tilted musta taught me something.) Playing blues and fat music punk, they’re Harry Doyle, Lauchie MacDonald, Dan Baldwin, and Hectron (the captain). ’77 recorded a demo at Spectrum Recordings last year, and the tape got fried at the last minute, so it doesn’t sound that great. You might be able to get a free copy of the ’77 demo if you ask real nice.

WHAT’S WITH THE FACTS?
I was getting bored dubbing tapes all afternoon, so I started writing facts on the back of all the covers. By the time I got to 12, I started to feel it and stopped. Maybe sometime I’ll put them up on the site.
