For most Canadian music lovers, singer/songwriter Dan Hill is best known for his 1977 hit ballad, “Sometimes When We Touch”, which rocketed him to chart success and international fame.
Since then, Hill has been busy on the Canadian music scene, releasing over 15 albums, including his most recent collection of new material, “Intimate”, in 2010. His music has covered by artists such as Tina Turner, Reba McEntire, George Benson, and Celine Dion. Ironically, given his music’s sensitive and introspective nature, one of Hill’s songs was included on the soundtrack of “First Blood”, the first Rambo movie.
He received much acclaim for his recent appearance at this year’s 40th Anniversary Junos and is currently is on tour with an intimate song and story telling stage show that is taking him from his Toronto home to Las Vegas to Atlantic Canada with two stops in Sydney.
Hill will play two shows at Kiju’s Restaurant in the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre on Tuesday, April 19, (which is sold out) and Wednesday, April 20, at 7:30 pm.
Along with being an internationally famous musician, Hill has also earned praise for his other writing skills (which should be no surprise because his brother, Lawrence Hill, wrote the acclaimed novel, “The Book of Negroes”).
Dan Hill’s memoir, “I Am My Father’s Son: A Memoir of Love and Forgiveness” (Harper-Collins), details how his parents left the social and political turmoil of the United States in the early 1950’s to move to Canada. Hill recounts his difficult relationship with his father, social scientist and human rights activist, Daniel G. Hill. He has also written about his own son’s involvement with Toronto street gangs.
Reviewer John Swartz says Hill’s one man show to be one of the best concerts he has seen, saying “I don’t think I’ve been to an event that was as moving as that was. Dan’s voice seems not to have aged. It was just spectacular…”
