The Voice Lab, for those 19 and older, will run in two modules from August 4-8 and August 6-8, 2014. Tuition for the 3 day module is $175 per person and tuition for the 5 day module is $300 per person.
The Voice Lab is an applied training program aimed at adults who have a passion for singing, but who might not have a great deal of performance or soloist experience. This program is ideally suited to those who love music-making, yet have issues with nerves, confidence and technique when under pressure. All types of singers, musics and repertoires are welcome. The fundamentals of healthy singing and performance power will be the foundation of the intensive. Actors, singers, musical theatre enthusiasts, singer-song-writers and choral musicians – this program is for you.
“Aimed at adults with a passion and love for singing but for whom the thought of performing a solo or taking centre stage is daunting, this program focuses on building confidence and giving performers everything they need to venture out into the limelight,” says Director of the Boardmore Playhouse Todd Hiscock. “While it is necessary to go beyond one’s comfort zone, classes will joyfully tackle stage nerves, anxiety and the fear that often challenges performers who come to the stage in adulthood. Vocal health and voice production will be fundamental to this discovery process.
The youth program for ages 12-18, entitled Broadway at the Boardmore, will run from August 11-15, 2014, with a tuition cost of $300 per person.
Broadway at the Boardmore is an intermediate to advanced applied training program aimed at singers, actors and dancers, integrating private voice lessons, master classes, performance seminars, and work in the areas of text (acting methods), movement and dance. All participants will build their “book” (performance portfolio – an excellent resource for auditions/casting) throughout the week, and perform in the Showcase Concert, a highly entertaining musical theatre compilation medley held on the last evening of the intensive.
“This challenging, no-holds-barred immersion in all things theatrical is the perfect way for young artists to dramatically improve their stage craft, performance technique, audition strategy and over-all storytelling power,” says Hiscock. “In an industry where you are only as good as your last gig, this program is ideally suited to performers who are interested in working on the professional stage.”
All interested performers are asked to prepare a vocal selection (from any genre) that best showcases their particular voice with regard to range and performance skill. Should this not be possible, they will be asked to sing a familiar song (“O Canada” or “Happy Birthday”, etc.) by the audition panel. Performers may also be asked to do a “cold read” (poem, monologue, etc.) at the request of the artistic director.
Faculty for the 2014 summer program includes Robyn Vaughn Cathcart, Artistic Director; Julie Martell, Guest Artist and Voice Instructor; Barbara Stetter, Guest Artist and Performance Coach; Bruce Cathcart, Scene & Monologue Work; and Peter MacDonald, Guest Artist and Collaborative Pianist.
