Food is the heart of communities. Everyday, food connects the health, economic, social, and environmental needs of Cape Bretoners. The Island Food Network (IFN) is organizing a series of community food conversations to ask: What matters to the diverse people of Cape Breton – Unama’ki when it comes to food? What do we want and need for food across our island? What would we like to create, grow, or change? Input will be brought together as a Shared Food Vision, but this is only a starting point. This process will inform a Strategic Food Action Plan. Supported by citizens and government, it will guide policies, programs, and practices within and across communities in Cape Breton.
“We really see this as a chance for people to be heard and to feel supported. Access to good food for all people, and a resilient local food system are essential to healthy, strong communities,” says Jody Nelson, Coordinator for the Island Food Network.
People can add their voice by completing IFN’s survey, attending a Community Food Conversation, or even hosting a Community Food Conversation. More information, including a conversation guide and a link to the survey, can be found at: islandfoodnetwork.ca.
“We would like to hear from as many people in Cape Breton as we can, especially those facing challenges related to food access,” says Nelson. “The Shared Food Vision will be communicated back to municipal and band councils across the island. The next step will be collaborating on turning this vision into action”.
