On Saturday, April 7th, farmers and aspiring farmers from across Cape Breton Island will gather once again to dig into topics of interest identified at our winter Farmer to Farmer Retreat. The Island Food Network has worked with the Department of Agriculture, Perennia and the Ecology Action Centre to offer The Farmer to Farmer Spring Session.
The group has invited Perennia specialists Rosalie Gillis-Madden and Amy Sangster, along with local farmer Len Vassallo, to share their knowledge on Getting to Know Your Soil; Evaluating Potting Mixes; Healthy Transplants; Tool Show and Tell; and Troubleshooting in the Field.
There will also be time for chatting, seed swapping and sharing in a meal. The Iona Heights Inn has offered their pub, the Frolic ‘n’ Folk, for this gathering. Guests are welcome to stay on for the evening Ceilidh for further informal time for discussions and celebration.
“It is such a great opportunity to put our heads together as our growing season gets under way,” says Jody Nelson, Coordinator of the Island Food Network and owner of LocalMotive Farm in Hunter’s Mountain. “It is also wonderful to have access to specialized knowledge in soils and horticulture without having to venture off the island for it. Mixed with our local knowledge, this session will really get us on the right track this spring.”
The Farmer to Farmer Spring Session will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Iona Heights Inn. The event is currently at capacity. Farmers and aspiring farmers who are interested in participating can be added to the waitlist by emailing islandfoodnetwork@gmail.com.
