International Women’s Day (IWD) is fast approaching, and once again Every Woman’s Centre will sponsor the 33rd annual Cape Breton IWD Concert & Celebration.
Last year the festivities were held at The Cedars Club and that turned out to be a great decision in so many ways–the location made it convenient for all attendees, the space was a perfect fit, and a great time was had by all. Canada’s theme, Girls’ Rights Matter, supports the development, prosperity and security of girls in Canada and around the world.
“This year we want to commend and support all women and girls in Canada and around the world, and recognize their contribution to prosperous, healthy and civil societies,” said Rona Ambrose, Minister for Status of Women. “A girl who enjoys equality has a greater likelihood of being self-confident and aware of her own potential, and of being empowered to access the education, training and career opportunities that will contribute to her success in life.”
In 1911, International Women’s Day was marked for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women’s rights and international peace. Canada then chose March 8 as International Women’s Day.
In Cape Breton the concert is open to women over 19 years of age, and the performers consist of an all female lineup of singers, actors, fiddlers, drummers, dancers, musicians and story tellers from the local area who generously donate their time and talent to be part of this very special evening for women of Cape Breton. The event takes place on Tuesday March 8th from 7:30 to 11:30 and doors open at 7pm. Admission at the door is $10 waged and $5 unwaged.
“All women are encouraged to join in for a great evening of music, song and story, and to celebrate each other and our accomplishments,” says Wanda Earhart who represents the Every Woman’s Centre and, along with Joella Foulds, organized the concert. “We are much indebted to Joella for her dedication throughout the past 33 years,” adds Earhart. “She works tirelessly to put together an excellent variety of talent, and on concert night is right there making sure that everything runs smoothly from start to finish. IWD has grown in popularity over the years in no small part to the attention to detail of Joella Foulds.”
