It is a simple fact that the local underground music scene is alive and well. About once a month, you can catch any number of great bands at the Northside Youth Centre, the Lyceum, and various other venues in the area. There are enough bands active on the scene that there’s no worry of having to sit through the same show or line-up twice. Most of these bands have released at least one independent recording, some of which are doing remarkably well. A few of these recordings are available in local stores like Sam the Record Man and Alternative Sports and can be heard on CAPR, CHER, and CJCB (though airplay is restricted to special times during the week). * Wednesdays at 9pm – “Now That’s Alternative” on CHER; Sundays at 10pm “CAPR’s Underground and In-Between” on CJCB.
The time has come to put some of this stuff together to solidify the local scene and to prepare for whatever’s beyond the outskirts of “Supercity Cape Breton”. But recording and distributing an album cam be expensive, no matter how many friends you have with equipment and people owing you favours. As a solution to this problem and a way to get attention and support for some very deserving bands, an upcoming compilation will feature music from approximately fifteen local bands. It is hoped that this project will be completed before the summer and plans for distribution are growing by the day. Bands featured on the album will range from brand new to the more experienced and established. Confirmed contributors include Mastadon Ridge, Rakad Ko, The Unwanted Guests, Hedge, Sunfish, Smiling Uniks, Stranger To Julian, Tilted, Sci-Fi-Hecto-Blamanam, Gunk, Shane Brown Fan Club and Autumn Pilgrimm.
Some concerts were organized to rasie money for this project and there has been great support and cooperation among those involved, directly and indirectly. Be sure to watch out for this great album this summer and support your local music scene. Vive la revolution!
