In.Sight Gallery is an artist-run gallery located in Sydney Mines. Local artist and art instructor Kathleen Bunin saw a need in the local community for artists to interact on both a professional and personal level, so she contacted some artists she knew for a meeting and In.Sight Gallery was formed.
The gallery opened in June with Homework, an exhibition of founding members’ work. Since then, exhibitions have included Images in July, Water in August, and Tar Ponds Respond With Art during September. Showing through October 17 will be Lineage (Roots & Lineage), followed by some fundraising projects.
“We will be holding a fundraising event, from November 2 until one week before Christmas,” says member Kimberley Floyd-Cote. “It will include a pre-Christmas raffle of donated art works. We would greatly appreciate any donations by artists who wish to support the gallery.”
“We are also calling for proposals for the year 1999 and for submissions for a show called Spice (celebrating difference). This opportunity is open to members and non-members alike.”
In.Sight exists to promote the arts, educate artists and the community, provide a venue for art exhibitions and cultural events, and support the work of artists.
Presently there are 11 members whose work includes collage, printmaking, painting, photography, sculpture, mixed-media, furniture design, glass candle votives and assemblage.
“It’s so nice to know that there is a venue available year round here in industrial Cape Breton for artists to show, discuss work and meet other artists,” says printmaker Teena Marie Saunders. “If the membership grew in numbers, the possibilities for the cooperative are endless.”
“In.Sight Gallery is a wonderful venue for artists,” aggress Kimberley Floyd-Cote. “It is so great to have other artists to help support you! Bringing awareness of the different art practices around Cape Breton to Sydney Mines and the surrounding community makes everything worthwhile. We are so pleased to be part of the Sydney Mines community.”
In.Sight is always seeking new members who would like to be part of the gallery, to support it in some way or to help with various tasks. The benefits of being a member are endless, including solo shows, the support of other artists, working together, curating shows, learning new things, and networking.
To become a member one must submit a portfolio to be reviewed. The annual membership fee is $50. Each member is guaranteed four weeks of shows per year either solo and/or group. Twenty-five percent of the profits from work sold goes to the running of the gallery if you are a member; for non-members, 35% goes to the running of the gallery.
