Put the inspiration taken from the world’s Olympic athletes this past week to good use by taking part in one of many unique winter sports activities happening in communities across the island this weekend.
Thursday night at 7:00pm Ski Ben Eoin offers a guided snowshoe tour through their trail system. Though no one will climb atop the podium, everyone is a winner as the evening ends up on the deck with free hot chocolate and outdoor fire. Tickets are combo deal with snowshoes for $12. Friday Night the Sydney Curling Club welcomes the general public to a “Fun Night” where beginners can push themselves out of the hack for the first time alongside regular club members. A “Fun Night” is simply an evening where anyone interested in Curling is made to feel welcome at the club. Club members in attendance are always ready and willing to give free instruction to people who want to try their hand at the sport in a relaxed atmosphere where having fun and meeting new people are the main goals. Also on Friday the ice surface at the Bayplex will be opened to all at a Free Skate at 2:00pm as part of Glace Bay’s Winter Fun Week.
All day Saturday Ski Ben Eoin presents the Rossignol Cup Dual Slalom, an elimination race which has competitors race through two timed slalom runs side by side with the winner advancing to the next round. Spectators are encouraged to come take in some sun on the deck and watch some great racing.
Should you find yourself down north on Saturday the North Highlands Cross Country Ski Club in Cape North is the place to be as they present “Happy Trails” from 10am to Noon each Saturday and Tuesday. Happy Trails is a social opportunity for adults to participate in guided skiing or snowshoeing for a few hours each week. Happy Trails is suitable for adults of all ages and abilities and affordable rentals are available. Later on that night the club presents a Moonlight Ski from 8-10 pm.
On Sunday, weekend warriors can come down from their high intensity training with public skating at Center 200 in Sydney at 8pm and the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre at Noon.
