The Downtown Sydney Regeneration Committee, in partnership with The National Trust of Canada, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) will be hosting Roger Brooks in Downtown Sydney next week. In addition to several small sessions, Brooks will be the keynote speaker at a free community event at the Highland Arts Theatre in Downtown Sydney on July 17th. The keynote presentation will run from 7:30 to 9pm. Tickets to the event are free, but seats are limited and RSVP is required through Eventbrite.
There are very few change-agents on the planet who have motivated more people in more places than Roger Brooks. An expert on placemaking, travel trends, community branding, and downtown revitalization, Brooks is an internationally renowned thought leader. This session will explore how important downtowns and tourism are to each other in creating an outstanding destination here in Sydney, for both our local residents and visitors travelling to our community.
“I remember Roger’s visit in 2013 when I still owned my store,” says Michelle Wilson, Executive Director for the Sydney Downtown Development Association and a member of the CBRM Regeneration Committee. “He had a truly amazing way of delivering his message in a way that was empowering and exciting. His advice is what guides much of what we do as an organization. A strong downtown really is important to us all, and I encourage people to come out and hear Roger deliver what I’m certain will be a message just as engaging as it was six years ago.”
Over the past 30 years, Roger Brooks has assisted nearly 2,000 communities in more than 45 U.S. states, across Canada, in Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Mauritius, with workshops and presentations, helping thousands of people transform ordinary communities, downtowns, businesses, and attractions into incredibly successful destinations through increasing tourism, creating community plans, and performing destination assessments.
“Downtown revitalization is essential to a positive and prosperous future here in our community of communities, and the future of our community and of our downtown is everybody’s business,” says Kathleen Yurchesyn, CEO of the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce and a member of the CBRM Regeneration Committee. “A thriving downtown core in an urban centre, like Sydney, benefits all communities, not just the Sydney area. Having a healthy, vibrant downtown results in positive economic development, increased private investment, the nurturing of our culture and heritage and overall improved quality of life, just to name a few things,”
