“Cape Breton is unique in the depth and breadth of its musical talent,” says Patricia M. Day, Acting President of Local 355 of the Canadian Federation of Musicians. “Many artists work only within their communities. Many are internationally known. All can benefit from this event by learning of the ways in which their efforts can provide for their future.”
Local 355, which covers all of Cape Breton, is sponsoring “Follow The Dollar$”, an information session on the business side of music, at the Grand Lake Road Fire Hall, 850 Grand Lake Road, at 7 pm, Monday, December 12. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
“This event is open to all who provide musical services,” Day explains. “Individuals make better decisions when they have a better understanding of the facts. The aim of the Canadian Federation of Musicians in hosting this event is to provide information and support. Naturally a broader membership base would allow for stronger support.”
The event features presentations by Bill Skolnik – American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Vice President from Canada; Serge Samson – Education And Events, Music Nova Scotia (MNS), with the title “It’s Business Time”; and Tim Hardy of the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), on the theme of “Follow The Dollar”.
Day adds, “The raison d’etre for musicians is first – the music, second – the music, third – the music. Each year the East Coast Music Association event offers workshops to describe the work done by SOCAN, Music Nova Scotia and Canadian Federation of Musicians working on behalf of songwriters, recording artists, and performers and the steps needed to ensure that individuals maximize their income streams today and into the future. Too often attendees and participants at the ECMA’s – although wanting, needing and intending to attend these workshops – find that they are unable to do so due to the performance demands on their time. This event will allow for artists in all capacities to become informed without the distractions of performing.”
A media release promoting the event states “Follow The Dollar$” is “the first time ever such an event has been held in the CBRM and organizers are expecting a big turnout.”
