The Cape Breton University Art Gallery is currently seeking emerging Cape Breton artists to participate in a juried exhibition proposed for 2012.
“The Glass is.” examines how young artists respond to the creative climate on Cape Breton Island. While some artists thrive here, others leave to attend art schools elsewhere and continue their creative paths off the island. What is the legacy that determines this? What factors, ideologies, or opportunities come into play for young Cape Breton artists?
Criteria: Artists must be under 35 years of age working in any media or format (sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, installation, textile or performance). Participants must identify as a Cape Breton artist (whether you’re from the island and now live elsewhere, or from elsewhere but now work as an artist in Cape Breton). Proposed artwork can deal directly or indirectly with the theme.
Applications must include: The artist’s biography and/or CV. A one-page proposal describing the project. A sample and rationale of the proposed project (e.g. sketch, video, photograph). High quality digital images of previous work.
The jurors will be CBU Art Gallery Director/Curator Laura Schneider, Artist and Assistant Guest Curator Gwendolyn Aker and Artist Kent Senecal.
The applications will be reviewed by the jury and shortlisted applicants will be contacted to discuss details and logistics of the project. The postmarked deadline for applications is June 30, 2011
