In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women’s rights and international peace. Following the United Nations’ lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women’s Day. Each year at this time, Canadians celebrate progress toward equality for women and their full participation, reflect on the challenges and barriers that remain, and consider future steps to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives.
Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day 2014 is: Strong Women. Strong Canada. Canadian Women – Creating Jobs One Business at a time. This theme highlights the important role women entrepreneurs play in driving growth, creating jobs, and fostering innovation in the Canadian economy. During International Women’s Week (March 2 to 8), Canadians will have the opportunity to celebrate, and reflect on the contributions of women entrepreneurs, as well as consider the challenges women face when starting and growing their own businesses.
Locally, Every Woman’s Centre will sponsor the 36th International Women’s Day Concert on Saturday, March 8, 8pm at St. Theresa’s Hall on St. Peter’s Road in Sydney. The event is for women over 19 who join together to celebrate their accomplishments through the years and it’s a chance to catch up with friends and colleagues on this very special occasion.
Maura Lea Morykot has been in charge of the entertainment again this year and promises an eclectic mix of female singers, musicians, poets, storytellers and dancers, who eagerly donate their talent to provide a fantastic evening of fun. It’s a great opportunity to come out and enjoy some of the finest entertainment on the island.
Doors open at 7:30pm and the event runs to midnight. Admission is $10 waged and $5 unwaged. For additional information on the concert please call Wanda at 567-1212.
