A recent day spent online playing “follow the links” took Halifax freelance journalist and novelist Jon Tattrie on a journey of discovery that unearthed a fascinating link between Cape Breton Island and one of reggae legend Bob Marley’s most beloved songs.
After landing on the Wikipedia page for the anthem “Redemption Song”, Tattrie learns the song’s lyrical roots can be traced to a “speech given by Marcus Garvey in Nova Scotia during October 1937”. Intrigued, Tattrie puts down the mouse and picks up the phone to learn more about Marley’s interest in this famous speech which took place in Cape Breton’s own Whitney Pier.

In 2004, Rolling Stone named Redemption Song the 66th Greatest Song of All Time.
