Friday, February 11 Dave Gunning and Catherine MacLellan, two of the Maritime’s finest folk singers, will perform at Strathspey place in Mabou. Showtime is at 8:00 and tickets are $25 or $20 for members.
Nominated for five 2011 ECMA awards – Fans Choice Entertainer of the Year, Folk Recording of the Year, Male Solo Recording of the Year, Roots/Traditional Recording of the Year and Producer of the Year – for two separate recordings We’re All Leaving and …. a tribute to John Allan Cameron longtime Maritime favorite Dave Gunning has reached a new plateau in an already celebrated career. 2010 saw Gunning win three East Coast Music Awards nominations and four 2010 Music Nova Scotia Awards. He was honored as a finalist in the Great American Song Contest and International Songwriting Competition and released his Cameron tribute. In 2011 Gunning has already showcased in Memphis at the Folk Alliance International Conference and at Ireland’s Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival.
Matching pure and ethereal vocals with poetic lyrics and her uncompromising song writing craft, there is no doubt as to why PEI native Catherine MacLellan has become one of the most celebrated new singer-songwriters in Canada, and around the world, by her contemporaries and media alike. Voted ‘Critics Favourite New Discovery’ by Penguin Eggs Magazine in 2008, Catherine has quickly built up a loyal fan base and has been a hit with critics worldwide. Her last album Church Bell Blues hit #1 on the iTunes Canada Roots charts and received critical acclaim, including comparisons to Joni Mitchell, from international magazines . She has toured with Bruce Cockburn in the USA and with Steve Forbert in the UK, showcased in Paris, Cannes, Berlin, New York, London, and Memphis.
