There’s no better combination I can think of than riding my bicycle and the Celtic Colours International Festival. Fortunately for me, Velo Cape Breton has three very amazing bike rides set up in conjunction with that wonderful festival which celebrates our fabulous fall colours and culture on our island.
The first ride is The Celtic Colours Bicycle Tour of St. Ann’s Bay. This is a 45km circumnavigation of the bay by bicycle, starting at 9:30 on October 11 from the Gaelic College. There is an optional breakfast at the Lobster Galley Restaurant, just down the hill from the college at the head of the bay, starting at 8 am. The price of breakfast is not included in the tour price. The ride will be at a slow pace, and will be suitable for all levels, although keep in mind the total distance is 45km. This ride will be a “historical tour”, featuring stops at points of interest (viewpoints, graveyards) with explanation of the interesting history of this area of CB. Local historians will be meeting the group to do historical interpretation. This event is free for Velo Cape Breton members, and 15$ for non-Velo members.
The second ride is the Tour d’Isle Madame. The ride starts at L’Auberge Acadienne, Isle Madame and runs from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. $10 for non-Velo CB members. Cycle the scenic routes of Isle Madame on Cape Breton’s Heritage Coast, through colourful fishing villages. This guided tour with spectacular ocean views touches on the Acadian Culture of the area. The ride is approximately 36km of paved roads, and easy, rolling terrain. (Bring your own bicycle, or prearrange a rental from Frameworks Cycle & Fitness, 273 Townsend Street Sydney, 1-800-567-1909) Contact Richard McIntosh to register for this tour: richdogca@yahoo.ca
The final ride is the Celtic Colours Ride to the Waterfalls. It is scheduled for October 18 at 10 am. This ride is for Mountain Bikes only, runs approximately 25km, is mildly challenging, and designed for capable, experienced cyclists. Meet at Fitzgerald’s Restaurant at Seal Island. (Head over early to meet the ride leaders for breakfast and to register).
These rides add a fabulous outdoor element to the Celtic Colours International Festival. If you feel like riding some awe-inspiring spots on our beautiful island in our best season, then you’ll want to take in one or all of these great rides
