On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, Cape Breton University (CBU) will host the 2nd Annual President’s Leadership Dinner. This gala dinner highlights leadership expertise by welcoming a nationally recognized expert from a broad spectrum of fields. The 2019 leader is Mr. Guy Lafleur, one of professional hockey’s most talented and awarded players.
Cape Breton University President & Vice-Chancellor, David C. Dingwall will take the stage with Mr. Lafleur during the gala dinner to provide the audience with an engaging and thought-provoking interview on leadership in the National Hockey League, both on and off the ice.
“This signature event brings notable speakers and influencers to the Cape Breton Island community. It allows us to dig deeper into what makes an exceptional leader in today’s changing business landscape, all while supporting our greatest assets – our students,” says David C. Dingwall. “We are very much looking forward to hosting this gala dinner and to learning from Mr. Lafleur.”
Lafleur thrilled fans with a career that ranks among the greatest of all-time. His speed, skill and pride epitomize the qualities that made the Montreal Canadiens of the 1970s the class of the NHL. “The Flower,” as he was known to teammates, blossomed in 1974-75, more than doubling the previous season’s numbers with 53 goals and 66 assists. Inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988, Lafleur returned the next season. He suited up with the New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques until 1990-91, becoming the second player after Gordie Howe to play in the NHL after being enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
As well, Cape Breton University is proud to announce that the 2019 inductee into the CAPERS Hall of Fame is the 2007 CAPERS Women’s Soccer Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Championship team. The team will formally be inducted during the President’s Leadership Dinner.
On November 11th, 2007, the Cape Breton University CAPERS defeated York University Lions by of score of 2-1 to take home the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) National Title. The game was played at the Veterans’ Memorial Turf in New Waterford under the leadership of seven-time Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Coach of the Year and three-time National U SPORTS Coach of the Year, Stephen “Ness” Timmons.
The CAPERS Hall of Fame, established in 2018, serves to recognize individuals and teams who exemplify what it means to be a CAPER and who have excelled during their time as a CBU student-athlete. The Hall of Fame also recognizes supporters who are making an impact in the world of sport and who are helping build the athletics program at Cape Breton University.
“Cape Breton University produces high level, nationally-recognized coaches and student-athletes and has for many years,” says John Ryan, Director of Athletics, Cape Breton University. “This group of women exemplifies the spirit of team and sportsmanship. Each one of these women is a true role model to young girls in our community and beyond. They carry the CAPER pride with them throughout their lives and we are excited to welcome them into the Hall of Fame, and celebrate this amazing accomplishment together as a CBU family.”
