The Cape Breton University Art Gallery is launching its 15th Annual Student, Faculty, Staff and Alumni Exhibition with an opening reception on Friday, February 4 from 4-6 p.m. All members of the university community have been invited to submit artwork in any medium including drawing, painting, photography, performance, sculpture and new media. Over 80 works will be on display. This year, the exhibit will also showcase works by local artist John Lannon. The exhibit runs through until March 4.
Lannon is a self-taught artist from Glace Bay, N.S. His oil paintings depict subject matter ranging from local history to broad universal themes such as religion, death, love and human nature. Like many artists working outside the mainstream, Lannon can be described as a visionary artist whose primary creative motivation is his unique personal vision.
During the reception an exciting announcement will be made regarding the Student, Faculty, Staff and Alumni Exhibition. “This annual exhibition, which has been running for 15 years, marks an occasion to celebrate the creative efforts of individuals connected to the university,” says Laura Schneider, Curator, CBU Art Gallery. “A non-juried exhibition, it has traditionally welcomed submissions from artists at all stages of development from the beginner to the seasoned professional. In the past, the exhibition has been open exclusively to individuals directly connected to the university. To acknowledge the Gallery’s role in serving the university community, and the community in its broadest sense, we are announcing that in the future the Student, Faculty, Staff & Alumni Exhibition will become the CBU Community Exhibition.”
Starting in 2012, the CBU Art Gallery will welcome submissions of artwork from students, faculty, staff and alumni and from members of the general public. This move will make the exhibition more inclusive and will acknowledge the diverse artistic abilities of Cape Bretoners by providing an opportunity for all members of our community to showcase their talents.
The CBU Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
