“It is not often that we get a chance to meet and engage with such an acclaimed author as Emma Donoghue and we are looking forward to giving the public that chance,” says Chris Thomson of CBRL.
At the McConnell Library in Sydney on Thursday April 30, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., Donoghue will read from her two most recent novels, Frog Music (set in 1870s San Francisco) and Room, and talk about how each explores the theme of parenting under desperate circumstances. Books will be available for purchase and signing during this evening event.
Donoghue will also offer a writing master class at CBU at 2:00 p.m. on Friday May 1, 2015, where she will take questions on the nuts and bolts of storytelling in some of her favourite genres, such as fiction long and short, and drama for stage, radio and screen. The master class will be offered in the CBU Manson Lounge. Members of the public are welcome to attend both of these free events, though pre-registration is required for the CBU Workshop.
“I’m very excited that we have an opportunity at CBU for anyone interested in writing across such a broad literary range to have a conversation with an author who so mindfully and engagingly explores themes of identity and relationships across time and place,” says Arja Vainio-Mattila, Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences.
Donoghue has written in diverse genres and has proven herself equally adept in fiction, drama and criticism. She is best known for her fiction, which has been translated into over 40 languages, and won her international awards and acclaim. After years of commuting between England, Ireland, and Canada, she settled in London (ON), where she lives with her partner and their son and daughter. The sensation that her novel Room generated placed her firmly in the public consciousness, and the growing number of awards and acclamations that her writing continues to garner is recognition of her literary talent. Born in Ireland, and now a Canadian citizen, Donoghue has earned her living as a full-time writer since 1997, when she graduated from the University of Cambridge.
