There may not be much snow on the ground right now, but there always seems to be some on its way, and that promise, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Recreation Department hopes to get residents out and active for the second annual Taste of Winter festival. With more than 40 activities planned from January 20th to March 31st, the festival will have outdoor and indoor fun, active living, and plenty of events to help you embrace the colder months ahead.
Taste of Winter has a full slate of activities planned for its kick off on Saturday, January 20th. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Ski Ben Eoin, the Taste of Winter Ski Bus returns to get people out to the slopes. Departing from Cape Breton University at 9am and noon, the bus will also make stops at City Hall on the Esplanade and Walmart in Sydney River before heading out to Ski Ben Eoin. The bus will depart Ski Ben Eoin at 1pm and 6pm. Riders will be given a coupon for a $22 lift ticket and rental rate at the hill, but riders with a season pass and their own equipment are encouraged to join. Registration is now open at tasteofwinter.ca.
Also on Saturday, January 20th, the Taste of Winter Outdoor Rink will have its grand opening at Open Hearth Park at 1pm. Currently under construction near the canteen, the rink measures 100’ x 60’ and is mechanically chilled to sustain operation in temperatures as high as 6-8 degrees Celsius. The rink will be in place from January 20th for one month, depending on weather and use. The rink will operate daily from 9am-9pm. Participants are asked to wear a helmet and be mindful of children on the rink as you enjoy yourself.
Learn to Curl Saturday as part of CBRM’s Taste of Winter Festival 2018[/caption]For those looking to head indoors, you can still hit the ice this weekend. Sydney Curling Club will host a Learn to Curl session for ages 7+ on Saturday, January 20th, at 2pm. All participants must bring clean sneakers, and participants under 12 require a helmet. Emera Centre Northside will host two free skates, at 7pm on Saturday, January 20th, and 11am on Sunday, January 21st. Participants are asked to wear helmets while on the ice.
The schedule for the Taste of Winter festival is being updated daily at tasteofwinter.ca as details are confirmed and added, with highlights including The Whiteout Snow Jam on February 23-25th, Louisbourg Slush Run and Walk on March 3rd, and the March Break Staycation from March 10-18.
