The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Recreation Department will celebrate 20 years of amalgamation on New Year’s Eve with an ambitious celebration featuring activities and entertainment for all ages.
Beginning at 6pm on December 31st, the North parking lot will be transformed into a Carnival site with a 70’ Expo Wheel on the Sydney Waterfront. The Carnival site will also include a carousel, free popcorn, and warming tents with carnival style games and free cotton candy. These rides will continue through Friday, January 1st, and Saturday, January 2nd, so that all will have the chance to enjoy.
For the children, the City Hall parkade will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland Theatre for a Disney’s Frozen singalong. Featuring the talents of Elsa of Rapunzel Magical Events, children will be singing along with the animated classic from 6-8pm.
The Bluewave Energy Mainstage will present performances by some of Cape Breton’s premiere entertainers. The Tom Fun Orchestra kick things off at 10pm with their Music Nova Scotia and ECMA winning brand of uptempo rock music. Following Tom Fun, 2014 Canadian Folk Award and 2015 ECMA Award winning group Còig will take the stage and present their modern-tinged traditional style. Leading into the New Year’s Countdown will be Jimmy Rankin who recently performed on a national stage as a part of Rogers Hometown Hockey. Rankin will be performing with a full band.
At midnight, the New Year’s Eve celebrations will close with CBRM’s largest fireworks display, presented by McKeil Marine. With the talented Dominion Fire Department at the helm, the fireworks will light up the sky as a beacon for how far we’ve come as a community and put an exclamation point of the New Year’s event.
All are welcome to attend this free CBRM event. In order to ensure accessibility throughout our communities, CBRM Transit will run free service to and from our outlying communities. This service is by preregistration and will run to the communities of North Sydney, Sydney Mines, New Waterford, Dominion, Glace Bay, Sydney River, and Louisbourg. To preregister, email recreation@cbrm.ns.ca or call 902-563-5510.
There is much more to CBRMNYE presented by Bell Aliant, with even more fun and exciting activities and performances to be announced in the coming days. Visit cbrmnye.ca for these details as they are announced.
