The Cape Breton Gaelic Society presents an Evening of Celtic Music on Tuesday, May 31, at 7:30 pm in the historic St. George’s Church, 199 Charlotte Street, Sydney.
The concert will feature Cape Breton style fiddling, Gaelic singing, Highland piping and more. Guest performers include Donnie Campbell, Chris MacDonald, Yvon LeFort, Jayne Olson, Morag Burke, Neil MacPhee, Courtney MacPherson, Anita MacDonald, Susan MacEachern, and Melanie MacDonald.
Tickets are $10 and available at the door when they open at 6:30 pm.
All proceeds from this concert go to support Gaelic language courses and scholarships.
The Gaelic Society offers two scholarships to students of Cape Breton University: the Sister Margaret Beaton scholarship and the Kay MacDonald scholarship, two champions of Gaelic language preservation in Cape Breton.
In the past, the Society offered Gaelic classes every Monday evening at 6:30 pm, from September to December and from March to May, at Holy Angels High School. With the closure of that school, classes will be moving to a new to be announced location but will still be taught at the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels with the traditional tea break followed by an hour of singing Gaelic songs, led by Kay MacDonald.
Starting February 5, 2011, the Society also sponsored Leugh ‘is Labhairt on Saturdays, 1 pm to 4 pm, sat the Sydney River Superstore community room. For a $10 registration fee, that program focused on reading a variety of Gaelic language materials while also offered opportunities to converse in Gaelic about those materials. This program is designed for intermediate and advanced Gaelic learners to have a chance to develop their reading, pronunciation, and speaking skills in a friendly, supportive environment. These classes are sponsored through the Nova Scotia Office of Gaelic Affairs.
