Music is my County is an exhibition of paintings and three dimensional works which explores traditional music and dance in Cape Breton. These colourful and playful works interpret the oral music culture as an imaginative realm which reflects the influence of place, memory, immigration and community. Figures of musicians, singers and dancers made from bone, old tools and musical instruments incorporate the mixed identities of human, animal and musical instruments. These mysterious sculptures of cross species hybrids and gestural paintings echo with the ancestral voices that are heard in the contemporary music of Cape Breton. The exhibit runs from October 4th-26th.
Catherine Gibbon is an visual artist who has exhibited her work throughout Canada. She is also a student of Celtic music and yearly resident of the Margaree Valley in Cape Breton.
