Celebrated performers Kim Dunn and Carmel Mikol are teaming up for a couple of shows together this weekend in Cape Breton. Still relative strangers, Dunn and Mikol first came together last spring for two Cape Breton shows, but have since been crisscrossing North America on separate tours. Last year’s spontaneous collaboration left audiences swooning at the warmth, humor, and natural chemistry of their shared show. Mikol and Dunn reunite Friday May 25 at the newly renovated Cape Breton Fudge Company in Sydney, and Saturday May 26 at Mikol’s hometown Community Hall in North River, St. Ann’s Bay.
“We don’t plan these shows,” Mikol admits. “We show up, sing our songs, and all the rest – the jokes, the stories, the harmonies, and the collaboration – all happens in real time. We hardly know each other, but somehow our music just makes sense together.”
Both artists bring years of touring experience and songwriting credit: Carmel Mikol with two critically acclaimed albums, three ECMA nominations and a John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize; and Kim Dunn as the recipient of the first ever ECMA for Musician Special Achievement, a successful solo album, and years of international touring as a key player with the likes of Jimmy Rankin, Rita McNeil, Bruce Guthro, Dave Gunning and many more.
Tickets are available now at the Cape Breton Fudge Company, 15 Prince Street in Sydney, for Friday’s show and at the Bean There Cafe in Baddeck for Saturday’s show. Tickets are $15 advance, $20 at the door. Showtime is 7:30pm.
