The Cape Breton University men’s soccer team have experienced mixed fortunes over the previous two campaigns. The Capers were crowned Atlantic University Sport champions for the first time in 2007 but the loss of key personnel and a squad that never fully gelled saw CBU miss out a playoff berth last season. The 2009 edition of the Capers boasts a talented core of veteran players and a mix of exciting new prospects the coaching staff will hope make for a successful blend in 2009.
The Capers will look to returning squad members Antonio Lowe, Silvano Rajkovic, Jason Davis and Shayne Hollis for inspiration on the field and big things are expected from England’s Andrew Rigby in his first season with CBU. The Capers have made a moderate start to the season with an opening day loss to the 2008 conference champion Dalhousie Tigers but have since rebounded with a draw the following day versus the Saint Mary’s Huskies and came away from a long and always taxing trip to Newfoundland with a draw and a win in games against the Memorial University Seahawks. The Capers play their first two home matches of the season this weekend with the perennially strong University of New Brunswick in town Saturday for a 5:15pm kickoff and a match Sunday at 3:15pm against an upcoming and skillful University de Moncton.
