Along with promoting the best in alternative and independent music, Caper Radio has sponsored three comedy shows at The Upstairs Club in Sydney’s North End.
The on-campus radio station for Cape Breton University is now gearing up to host their fourth comedy show on Thursday, August 4, at 9 pm, with two popular Halifax acts and, as Caper Radio’s online promotion says, “three bearded Capers”.
Ben Mills was born and raised in the port town of Nanaimo, British Columbia, before a long circuitous life journey took him to Halifax (twice). Besides his stand up at various Halifax venues, he’s performed in skit comedy and hosts a popular Sunday afternoon trivia competition in a downtown bar.
Marc Hartlen is also a popular name on the Halifax comedy circuit. Hartlen has appeared on Tom Green’s House Tonight! and is featured in several popular YouTube videos.
The trio of bearded Cape Breton comics is led by Nick Beaton. Performing sometimes eight or nine shows a week, Beaton has spent almost a decade on Toronto’s comic circuit learning his craft. He has toured the Maritimes as part of the Yuk Yuk’s monthly comedy show and is presently hosting a weekly Sunday night comedy show at Sydney’s Capri Cabaret.
Ash Young and Stefan MacNeil are both local up and comers who take their material from their Cape Breton surroundings. They’ve played many local shows and are fearless in subject matter and delivery.
And audience members take note: comedians, unlike rock bands, like to start on time, so don’t come late. Admission is 7 dollars at the door for those 19 years and up.
