Cape Breton’s annual contemporary art festival, Lumière, is accepting artist submissions from March 16 until April 30. In the spirit of the international Nuit Blanche phenomenon, Lumière brings art to the streets, shop fronts, sidewalks, and public spaces of downtown Sydney. For the eighth consecutive year, the festival will present contemporary art projects that transform Sydney’s civic spaces.
The 2017 festival brought over 15,000 people to the Sydney Waterfront District. Audiences experienced more than 40 installations, performances, workshops, and talks presented by artists and community members during the three-day festival.
Lumière 2018 will celebrate the unique character of Unama’ki / Cape Breton Island by inviting artists to consider its place both within and beyond the boundaries of Unama’ki, Mi’kma’ki, and Turtle Island. Issues of identity, place, and “exchange at the edge” are some of the suggested topics to connect with this year’s Lumière theme of Erosion. Professional and emerging artists, performers, and local community groups are encouraged to apply. Festival organizers are looking for fresh, engaging projects from artistic disciplines including visual arts, theatre & performance, music and sound, film and video, fine craft, and dance.
Festival Chair Alyce Maclean says, “Lumière is an extraordinary platform for collaboration, cross-pollination, and dialogue between artists and audiences. The art-at-night event transforms ordinary and depressed civic spaces into extraordinary places of creativity, vitality, and vision. It is a celebratory and vibrant event that brings together thousands of citizens from across the CBRM, Cape Breton, and Nova Scotia to imagine a different type of future – one that looks very different from our past – that has arts, culture, community, entrepreneurs, tourism, and education at its heart.”
Lumière 2018 will take place over three days: artist talks and workshops will be held on September 27 and 28, and the signature art-at-night event will begin at sunset on Saturday, September 29, ending at midnight. The deadline to apply is April 30, 2018.
