Dr. Heather Sparling, the Canada Research Chair in Musical Traditions, will provide an overview of the program and there will be an opportunity for questions.
“We are hearing lots of great feedback from the community about the program. People are interested and I am sure they have lots of questions. We’re encouraging students, parents and educators to come out and learn about the program,” she says. The CBU BACS music major program is the only program of its kind in Canada.
The program specializes in traditional and tradition-based popular music. Offered within the BACS degree, music students will have the opportunity to complete two music-related work placements, providing them with in-the-field experience prior to entering the workforce. The program offers unique course offerings in a variety of musical traditions including Celtic, Gaelic, Acadian, and First Nations as well as popular music, world music, and music theory. Students also have the option to minor in business.
Additionally, Kimberley Fraser, a well-known local fiddler and graduate from the Berklee College of Music, will share her experiences of integrating informal and formal learning into traditional music.
